Imperious buildings near Scena/Schenna

The mighty Scena/Schenna Castle looks down imperiously over the village. The Castle was built in the 12th century by the Duke of Tyrol. Today it is owned by the ancestors of the Archduke Johan. Inside its walls you can admire impressive collections of weapons and paintings, as wall as magnificent high rooms and beautiful furniture.

Also don't miss the mausoleum commissioned by Archduke Johan of Austria. This neo-Gothic building was constructed from granite and red sandstone from 1860 to 1869 and serves as the burial site of the Archduke's family. The mausoleum is open to visitors from April to October.

The most famous of all the castles in the area is probably Tyrol Castle. Located on a rock above Merano/Meran, the Castle was inhabited b the Dukes of Tyrol for many centuries. Today, it is home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and National History.
